Industrial Ethernet Switch: A Practical Guide to DTECH SW1000 Series
Industrial networks are different from typical office networks. Equipment may need to operate inside control cabinets, production lines, outdoor electrical cabinets or other environments where temperature, electrical interference, installation space and power conditions must all be considered.
For these applications, an industrial Ethernet switch needs to provide more than basic Ethernet connectivity. Installation method, power input, environmental specifications, protection features and network performance all become important selection factors.
The DTECH SW1000 Series is an industrial-grade unmanaged Ethernet switch family designed for industrial and outdoor network edge-access applications. The series is available in 5-port and 8-port configurations, with both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet options.
An industrial Ethernet switch connects multiple Ethernet devices within an industrial network.
Typical devices may include:
Compared with a conventional office Ethernet switch, an industrial switch is normally selected according to the installation environment and electrical requirements as well as the number and speed of network ports.
For example, the DTECH SW1000 Series uses DIN 35 rail installation, fanless natural cooling and a metal housing with an IP40 protection rating.
The SW1000 family includes four main models:
| Model | Ethernet Ports | Speed | Input Voltage | Operating Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SW1000-5FT-BU-2D | 5 | 10/100 Mbps | DC 12–52V | -30°C to +70°C |
| SW1000-8FT-BU-2D | 8 | 10/100 Mbps | DC 12–52V | -30°C to +70°C |
| SW1000-5GT-BU-2D | 5 | 10/100/1000 Mbps | DC 12–52V | -30°C to +70°C |
| SW1000-8GT-BU-2D | 8 | 10/100/1000 Mbps | DC 12–52V | -30°C to +70°C |
These configurations allow engineers to select between Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet according to the network architecture and connected equipment.
One of the first decisions when selecting an industrial Ethernet switch is network speed.
The SW1000-5FT-BU-2D and SW1000-8FT-BU-2D provide 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports.
For applications requiring Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, the SW1000-5GT-BU-2D and SW1000-8GT-BU-2D provide 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. The Gigabit models have switching capacities of 10 Gbps and 16 Gbps respectively.
For a new industrial network, Gigabit Ethernet can provide additional bandwidth for applications involving higher data traffic. However, engineers should always match the switch specification to the actual network architecture and connected devices rather than selecting a higher speed simply because it is available.
Control cabinets and industrial equipment often use DIN rails to organize power supplies, PLCs, relays and communication equipment.
The SW1000 Series supports DIN 35 rail installation, allowing the switch to be integrated into industrial control cabinets and equipment enclosures. The design also uses fanless natural cooling, eliminating the need for an internal cooling fan.
This can be useful where installation space is limited and maintenance requirements need to be minimized.
Industrial equipment can use different DC power systems depending on the installation.
The SW1000 Series supports DC 12–52V input, covering commonly used 12V, 24V and 48V industrial DC systems. The specification also identifies reverse-polarity protection.
The product documentation further specifies dual DC 12–52V power inputs with reverse-polarity protection as a product feature.
This makes the power architecture an important consideration when integrating the switch into industrial control or outdoor electrical systems.
According to the SW1000 specification, the switch is designed for an operating temperature range of -30°C to +70°C and a storage temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. Working humidity is specified as 10%–90% RH without condensation.
The product specification also lists:
The documented ESD levels are ±6 kV contact discharge and ±8 kV air discharge, while the network interface surge specification lists 2 kV common-mode and 1 kV differential-mode protection.
The product documentation identifies several application areas, including:
For production lines combining PLC controllers and industrial cameras, the documentation describes the need for low-delay and anti-interference industrial networking and identifies 5-port and 8-port switches as a local network convergence option.
Not every industrial network requires VLAN configuration, routing or advanced Layer 3 functions.
For smaller edge networks where the primary requirement is Ethernet connectivity, an unmanaged switch can simplify deployment.
The SW1000 Series is designed as a plug-and-play, zero-configuration unmanaged Ethernet switch. The network ports support half-duplex, full-duplex, auto-negotiation and MDI/MDI-X adaptive modes.
For system integrators and equipment manufacturers, this can reduce configuration requirements during installation.
When choosing an industrial Ethernet switch, engineers should evaluate:
The DTECH SW1000 Series provides 5-port and 8-port industrial unmanaged Ethernet switch options with Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet configurations, DIN-rail installation, DC 12–52V input and fanless cooling.
For industrial automation, machine networking and edge network applications, selecting the correct configuration should always start with the actual network and environmental requirements.
